Somatic Exploration and Movement Shiatsu
A programme of self-exploration and body-awareness using the techniques of Movement Shiatsu, Inner Qigong, Experiential Anatomy and Wolfson Voicework.
The four workshops are a journey of self-discovery open and accessible to anyone, but they will also be practically useful for therapists of all modalities, showing an approach to working with people that doesn’t aim to fix problems but rather to wake up the capacity to explore oneself. Above all, these workshops are fun and celebratory of our human potential.
Qualified practitioners who complete all four workshops will receive a Postgraduate Certificate in Movement Shiatsu from the School for Experiential Education.
Four Long Weekends in Frome, Somerset (accommodation provided)
Starting Friday lunchtime until Sunday 5pm.
Introductory Day – Jan 15th
The overall theme of these workshops is to break free of our conditioned patterns and to live more spontaneously, listening to the wisdom that our body can give us. This needs a deep awareness of the body because our habitual patterns are maintained by unconscious sensory messages from the fascia and muscles that sabotage our attempts to break free of habits and conditioning.
Jan 15: OPENING THE INNER DOOR
Mar 31-Apr 2: ROOT AND BRANCH
Jul 13-15: CREATIVITY AND SPONTANEITY
Oct 20-22: RELEASING THE PAST
Dec 8-10: SELF AND SOCIETY
TASTER DAY: OPENING THE INNER DOOR
Modalities: Voicework & Movement Shiatsu
In the modern world we are swamped by too much information through the media. Our focus of attention is forced outward onto the problems of the world. This workshop looks inwards to the amazing being that is our body through subtle bodywork and guided voice and movement explorations. We will show how working through the body can open the door to a universe of potential resources for living which we habitually ignore. The fundamental principle of Movement Shiatsu is to discover ABILITY rather than to focus on curing DISABILITY. This is the theme of the whole year’s programme and this workshop aims to give a direct experience of the profound change of viewpoint one gets if you focus on what you can do rather than your problems.
March 31 – April 2
SPRING: ROOT AND BRANCH
Modalities: Voicework & Movement
A plant needs a wide root system to reach all the nutrients it needs. The roots of a human are the archetypes that express the wide potential of each human being. But we typically only use a small part of our potential and repress the rest into the unconscious.
This course uses voice-work based on the approach of Alfred Wolfson to explore and value buried parts of oneself. Our self-limitation is reflected in the voice. This form of work stretches, extends and challenges your voice to expand outside these habitual limits and, in the process, you discover and expand the potential of your self. You don’t need to be a singer, or to hold a tune to do this work.
SUMMER: ENERGY, CREATIVITY AND SPONTANEITY
Modalities: Spontaneous Movement, Voicework, Somatic Exploration
This workshop uses bodywork, movement and voicework to liberate our playful, spontaneous energy and to use that to learn to improvise with others. We will explore contact improvisation, mask-work, improvised harmony singing and spontaneous movement processes.
In the consumerism of modern society, mass media and multinationals bewitch us into following fashions and passively consuming what they produce. In this workshop we will try to break out of this conditioning and explore our inner sources of creativity. Once we taste the energy of spontaneity we also become aware of our conditioning and inhibitions which we will work with in the following workshop.
AUTUMN: RELEASING THE PAST
Modalities: Movement Shiatsu, Trauma Release, Breathwork and Inner Qigong
This workshop focuses on creating a sense of safe space in which we can let go of the habitual patterns we have developed in order to deal with overload, trauma and past pain. We will introduce bodywork to sense the internal organs and the enteric nervous system which are the parts of the body which are least affected by conditioning but which also store the emotional pressure repressed by that conditioning.
This leads into breathwork to expand the soft tissues and feel inner support and into movement experiments to develop clear boundaries and fill your personal space. Expanding into personal space gives the feeling of confidence to be yourself and to let go of the fears that often inhibit our authenticity. Through this work we will develop a form of Qigong the practice of which develops the themes of the course.
WINTER: SELF AND SOCIETY
Modalities: Somatic Exploration, Developmental Process, Movement Shiatsu
This workshop explores a central human dilemma: How can we value our individuality at the same time as living harmoniously with other people?
We often suppress our spontaneous self because of a fear of other people’s disapproval. Sometimes this is appropriate but more often it inhibits our creativity and authenticity.
One can see each individual as a community; a community of sub-personalities, organs, muscles and bones which are held together into a unified sense of self by the fascia and nervous systems.
Society’s expectations can silence most of this community. The workshop will explore, through bodywork, movement and voicework, how to wake up and listen to these forgotten parts of the self and along the way demonstrates a way of living with others creatively, valuing each others’ differences and respectfully resolving conflict.
